Pastries
Baclayon is celebrated as the Pastry Capital of Bohol, a title dating back to the Spanish era. Pastry making became popular during the construction of Baclayon Church in which a million egg whites were used for the Church’s cement, so the Spanish taught the community how to make cookies and other pastry treats to resourcefully utilize the yolks. The success of pastry making in Baclayon has meant that the tradition, skills, and recipes have continued to be passed down from generation to generation.
The most famous of these delicacies are Broas, otherwise known as “Lady Fingers”, along with peanut bars, baked polvoron, butter cookies and egg pastels among others.
Sample your own pastry delights at at Sampaguitas Cakes & Pastries, behind Baclayon Church, or visit Osang’s Homemade Pastries, just along the road from Sampaguitas (see Baclayon Map for details) to watch the renown treats being lovingly created while tucking into a bag of your own. Eat your heart out!
